Why do anything at all?
I mean.. at the end of the day, we go to bed, and start all over again... so why should I do anything? Honestly that is a thought I have often with myself.
Every Sunday, take out the garbage to the can. Then take the can to the street side. Monday morning, drag the can back to the house. Repeat on Wednesday, and again on Sunday...
But I keep doing it.. why? because the pile up of garbage STINKS!
RIGHT!
And then the stink invites bugs, and the outcome is worse than if I just actually take out the trash every day, every week, and keep being productive as it contributes to my sanity and my family's mental and physical health.
That was a pretty extreme example, cause... I know.. everyone is going to keep taking out their trash! but in all reality.. the trash resembles the "things" we need to do... some of them are huge and require more time, some of them don't take much time, but we still drag our feet and would rather waste 30 minutes playing games on our phones or scrolling the black hole of social media... than spend 10 minutes folding a load of clothes and putting it away!
Been there!
So... How do you like to get things done? for me.. I love a good detailed list!
And doing things in a way that flows and creates Time saving opportunities along the way.
When I have really big projects, I need to collect all the info, get it visually organized, then arrange and fine tune. That sometimes takes me a few weeks, as I also need time to really deep think on how the project flows, and what the end result should or will be. That thinking time, I can get really lost in it, so I usually have a place to make notes and jot down ideas.
How do you need to get things done? Because we have already established that you really should! ;)
Do you need a list? Do you utilize Technology? Are you a paper, visual person? Do you need things broken down into smaller tasks? Do you love to play a game and try to get as many things done in a time period? Do you love to collaborate with others?
There are lots of ways to be productive! And getting prepared is part of that mental clarity... making space to be ABLE to get stuff done can be the part that makes us procrastinate!
If your home or workspace is cluttered and messy, then your creativity may get stifled. If you have too many "to do's" on your list, and feel you need to do them ALL right now, today.. then you will most likely not get any done today. Or tomorrow.
Think about this.. what if you could practice different ways of being productive, to find the one or the few that really energize you? WHAT?! Is that a thing?!
YES!! Every great performance has hours of rehearsing or practice so that the "show" goes smoothly.
Here is a method... "Time Blocking".. you may have heard of it! Setting aside certain time "blocks" to do tasks. And when the time is up, you do something else. Or reward yourself!
Here is another one: "The 5 Second Rule" Pick up something, and if you hold it for more than 5 seconds, you have to put it away.. in the spot that it belongs. This could be a fun one for kids! ;)
And another.. "Environment Optimization".... Huh??
Make your spaces organized and get equipment that you will actually use. In other words, make your spaces pretty and effective for what you need them to be.
Your office, should not have your kids toys all over it, or your bedroom really should not be your office (been there done that due to space issues, so.. no guilt or shame!)
If a room or space in your home, needs a little TLC to make it workable, then DO IT!
I did some research a few months ago.. and made a really cool tool! Cause ya know.. I love to learn, research, and then share it with you.. cause that is my strength! :)
