Biotin.. NOT only for hair growth!

I learned something recently... Biotin... a necessary B7 vitamin for the metabolism of fatty acids, amino acids, and breaks down carbs and proteins for your body to use as energy... is so widely marketed as a "hair growth" supplement. It is EVERYWHERE, being sold for hair and nail growth.

WHY!!!>???

Biotin is available in the food we eat. or should be eating...so why are we being told to use it specifically for hair growth?

That kind of misinformation gets me in my core....

You can take supplements and or EAT the right kinds of food. Most of us opt for a vitamin as it's a really easy way to get what we need if our diets are lacking. Some really good sources of biotin include legumes, egg yolks, organ meats, nuts, seeds, mushrooms, avocados, sweet potatoes, and yeast. Most people can get all of the biotin they need by eating a balanced diet. DING DING DING!!!!

I went on this hunt because my hair is thinning.. UGH UGH UGH.. good ole menopause... maybe my shower head cause of the hard water we have?... and yes I can always eat more avocados! So my research has lead me here. Uncovering misinformation, cause that is what I am going to call it, and researching and finding what I need and sharing with you.. in case you needed to know. :)

So the lack of Biotin can cause hair loss, but also a host of other skin issues. But taking it as a supplement all by itself will not bring back the hair. Biotin is one B vitamin but is not solely responsible for bringing back the hair. You actually need a good combination of B vitamins, A, C, D (sunshine), iron and E.

Let's break them down..

Vitamin A: responsible for new cellular growth. You can find vitamin A naturally in foods like milk, eggs, yogurt, sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, pumpkin and kale.

Vitamin C: Antioxidant which fights the free radicals. Free radicals attack the cells, which can cause block new growth coming in causing hair loss, skin issues, etc. AND Vitamin C stimulates collagen growth in the cells...which is used by your cells to create the protein Keratin.... the protein that is needed for hair growth.

Iron: is used by red blood cells to carry oxygen to the cells... our sells need oxygen to survive...

Omega's: necessary for cellular energy! cause making hair cells requires energy....and joint health, and hair and nails... ;)

Vitamin B's: all of them! They all have a part to play in the maintenance of our cells, energy production, cell metabolism, and maintaining healthy nerve function.

So what did I discover?

That when our cells have what they need to function, then our skin, hair, and nails all reflect what is going on on the inside. When something is off balance in our bodies, our body lets us know.

Thinning hair... hormones can be off balance. Your home water may be clogging pores. Stress... vitamin deficiency. So we go on the hunt to help our bodies be healthy and happy. We look up the root causes and check off the boxes to find the solution that works best for us.

This crazy rabbit trail led me to some good info. While most "hair loss" vitamins boost only Biotin... look more closely. It should also have the Vitamin C, Iron, E, Pantothenic Acid, and some other B vitamins. My conclusion is that biotin is needed along with all the others!

I will be taking some new vitamins, as well as getting a filter for my shower head. And the stress management... well under way! Working out 3-4 times a week is a HUGE help! And eating more fatty acid foods and higher amounts of protein!

And yes, I did find a couple that could be fabulous (I will be trying one!) based on the ingredients and the company reputation. Easy clicks below!

PS: Just make sure that your hair loss or thinning is not caused by something more intense or serious!

I have taken Maryruth's vitamins and they are always good! Bounce Curl is a new one!
